Critics said that Marcelo in the Real World deals with issues such as hypocrisy in society , morale , and sacrifice. What does it mean to have knowledge of good and evil? The idea of the "real world" that Arturo is so determined to have Marcelo join is a subjective viewpoint that can only be referred to from an individual's personal opinion.

What Francisco X. Stork is attempting to portray with the idea that Marcelo must join the real world, is that there is no such existence of a place where all individuals must conform; Marcelo's world was just as real as Arturo's or Jasmine's. This symbolizes the misconception that everyone revolves around the same lifestyles that relate to us personally. In order to understand Stork's purpose for writing this piece of literature, one must first understand the idea that the "real world" does not exist within a conscientious state of mind.

Marcelo in the Real World received mostly positive reviews. Jul 30, Sherry rated it really liked it Shelves: historical-fiction , I enjoyed this book and read it quickly -- 24 hours. I had trouble getting into it because the style was a bit stiff and perfunctory and dialogue for all characters had a similar syntax and tone and was overall a bit flowery and formal. However, I was completely captivated by the story of the Spanish inquisition and the people it terrorized.

Marcelo Garcia on the Guillotine from Closed Guard

They send him to the new world as a novice priest, to keep him safe. There, he is a part of the exploration of New Mexico and the founding of Sante Fe. The story is heart rending and spotlights the shame of the inquisition, and all who persecute others who do not have the same beliefs or religion. The inquisition is nothing short of serial killing authorized by the church.

I was very moved, and inspite of the slight awkwardness of the writing, it is a story that needs to be told and told in this personal way. I give it 4 stars.
